The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a billion-dollar behemoth resembling a spaceship, has opened in Exposition Park, Los Angeles. Designed by Chinese architect Ma Yansong, the 300,000-square-foot museum houses the art collection of George Lucas and Mellody Hobson. It features over 80,000 square feet of exhibition space, including a Star Wars display with Luke Skywalker’s X-34 Landspeeder.

The museum also includes Norman Rockwell paintings, manga art, two state-of-the-art theaters, a library, and a landscaped roof garden. Lucas acquired his first artwork, a V. T.

Hamlin 'Alley Oop' comic, in the 1970s; his collection now exceeds 40,000 works. The museum opens to the public on Sept. 22 and is located across from the University of Southern California, where Lucas studied film. Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects, designed the museum as his first major American cultural commission, blending futuristic gestures with narrative art spaces.
