The Pentagon reported the cost of the war in Iran was $43.6 billion through Sept. 3, with munitions accounting for over 60%. The unclassified breakdown shows the Air Force spent $6.6 billion, the Navy $2.2 billion, and the Army $1.6 billion. Over 50,000 troops are assigned.

Since the war started Feb. 28, the military burned through $28.1 billion in munitions, depleting global stockpiles. It spent $4.3 billion to replace damaged aircraft and $633 million for Special Operations. The Pentagon says 18 service members were killed and more than 830 injured.

Congressional officials said the figures are almost certainly low, noting the estimate excludes $1.5 billion for fuel and other costs in a supplemental request, and does not include repairs to facilities like the Navy base in Manama, Bahrain. The State Department estimated $184 million in damage to diplomatic facilities.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has kept the financial accounting largely under wraps. The Congressional Budget Office said the war cost roughly $38 billion through Aug. 1.
