Bob Mackie, the exuberant costume and fashion designer whose glittering creations defined American entertainment for over half a century, died on Monday in Palm Springs, California. He was 87. Mackie’s sequined gowns and outrageous costumes bedazzled performers including Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Bette Midler, and most memorably, Cher.

His work on The Carol Burnett Show created iconic characters, including Mrs. Wiggins, whose mincing walk was born from Mackie’s instruction to "stick your behind back into it." His curtain dress for a Gone With the Wind parody is now in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Mackie began his career sketching for designers Jean Louis and Edith Head before television made his name. When Carol Burnett launched her variety show in 1967, she picked Mackie to design the costumes.

Over 11 seasons, he created an average of 60 costumes a week for the cast. Mackie also dressed Elton John, RuPaul, and famously transformed Barbie with an 11½-inch wardrobe. His collaboration with Sonny and Cher helped define their Las Vegas look.

Frank De Caro, author of Unmistakably Mackie, noted that Mackie dressed "every spangly woman in show business.".
