Mourners and dignitaries gathered this morning in Lower Manhattan to honor the thousands of people killed 25 years ago, when terrorists crashed two airplanes into the World Trade Center, shaking America and the world. It took four hours to read the names of nearly 3,000 people who died: Gordon M. Aamoth Jr.; Edelmiro Abad; Marie Rose Abad.

Solemn ceremonies were also held at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. President Trump spoke of American resilience: “Sept. 11 reminded us of the terrible power of hate.” All four other living presidents attended the New York memorial. Zohran Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, was also present.

The ceremony began at 8:46 a.m. with silence honoring American Airlines Flight 11 striking the North Tower. Five more silences marked later crashes and the buildings’ fall. A seventh silence mourned those who died from cancer and other illnesses caused by toxic dust.
