Alan, the French health start-up backed by Prosus and footballer Kylian Mbappé, has acquired Senegalese insurer Tanel to expand into west Africa. The deal follows Alan’s €5.5bn valuation after a recent fundraising round, during which it raised €580mn this year. Alan, with over 1mn members and €840mn in annual recurring revenue, currently operates in France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada.

Tanel, valued at $7.5mn in 2024, serves about 70,000 people in Senegal and Ivory Coast with clients like Yango and KFC. The acquisition marks a rare healthcare investment exit in Africa for backers including Nigeria-based Ventures Platform and Japan’s AAIC. Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve, Alan’s CEO, said familiarity with the Tanel team made the fit ideal.

Mouhamed Ndoye, Tanel’s Dakar-based CEO, noted the acquisition aligned with their initial plans. Tanel will be rebranded as Alan, with Ndoye and co-founder Makhtar Diop leading operations and future expansion into English-speaking west and east Africa.
