Standard Chartered Plc Chief Executive Officer Bill Winters said the bank had shut down the accounts used by a Russian money laundering ring after it discovered attempts to circumvent Western sanctions imposed in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. Winters responded to a report in the Financial Times on Tuesday that named the British lender among several international banks that were deceived into moving more than $6.9 billion for a Russian government-backed fintech. Standard Chartered had taken money from "bad guys" but that its systems had picked up the sanctions-busting, Winters said at Bank of America Corp.'s annual financials CEO conference.
