Brookfield Recapitalizes Center Parcs at $6B

Brookfield is nearing a recapitalization of Center Parcs in a deal valuing the British holiday park operator at about $6 billion, people familiar with the matter said. The asset management group is bringing in investors including Australian Retirement Trust and fellow Australian pension fund Mercer Super, according to the people. More than three quarters of the capital being injected into the business will come from new backers, they said.

Representatives for Brookfield and Australian Retirement Trust declined to comment, A spokesperson for Mercer Super didn't immediately respond to queries. Sky News reported that Brookfield was nearing a recapitalization agreement.

Brookfield has owned Center Parcs for more than a decade, having acquired the group from Blackstone Inc. in 2015 for an undisclosed amount. Since then it's invested more than £750 million ($1 billion) in refurbishing Center Parcs' holiday villages, one of the people said. Brookfield also extended the group's spa offerings and started construction on a new site in Scotland.

Center Parcs operates five resorts in the UK and another in Ireland. The hospitality and leisure company has historically been a popular destination for families choosing so-called staycations over holidays abroad.
