Big Oil Hunts Crude in South America's New Frontier

Big Oil is putting big money into South America as the continent emerges as a top hunting ground for crude. Exxon Mobil, Chevron, and Total Energies are renewing exploration efforts amid rising energy demand and geopolitical turmoil. Exxon declared an 'absolute resounding yes' to more exploration at a conference in Brazil, where it's active in the Equatorial Margin.

Chevron has expanded its resource footprint sixfold in Guyana over two years, while Total Energies' Patrick Pouyanné emphasized finding new reserves is crucial. After a 10% decline in oil industry capital spending over the past decade, exploration is forecast to tick up in 2026. South America's unexplored areas and recent world-class discoveries in Guyana, Suriname, and offshore Brazil make it attractive, offering less geopolitical turbulence than the Middle East.
