Saudi Arabia pulls multi‑billion backing from LIV Golf

Saudi Saudi Arabia has decided to pull its multi‑billion‑dollar support from LIV Golf once the current season ends, casting doubt on the tour’s future. The move follows the postponement of the June New Orleans event and a pause in U.S. tournaments until the Trump Bedminster stop in August. LIV’s chief executive, Scott O’Neil, insisted the 2026 season would run “as planned.”

LIV’s financial outlook remains fragile. In 2024 the tour posted net losses of $462 million in markets outside the U.S., pushing total losses since 2021 past $1.1 billion, and face significant financial uncertainty. The Saudi Public Investment Fund contributed a fresh $267 million this year, bringing total investment above $5 billion. Without new backers, organizers warn the event schedule could shrink dramatically.

Key players such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith will still contest the remaining tournaments, but the tour’s future hinges on securing alternative sponsors. PIF’s shift toward more sustainable investments signals a strategic pivot that may leave LIV without the capital needed to maintain its 72‑hole format. The series faces a potentially scaled‑back calendar, with fewer events and tighter budgets, as the tour redefines its brand identity.
