Nick Kyrgios is eligible to return to tennis after accepting a one-month ban for testing positive for cocaine. The Australian, 31, was provisionally suspended on 4 August after a sample submitted during the Mallorca Open in June contained benzoylecgonine. Kyrgios told the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) he used cocaine at a nightclub in Magaluf on 20 June, two days before his first-round loss to Adam Walton. The ITIA accepted the use occurred outside competition, reducing a potential three-month ban to one month after Kyrgios entered a treatment programme. The ban ended on 3 September, and he forfeits 6,570 euros in prize money.

Kyrgios, ranked 918, has played just four singles matches this season due to knee and wrist injuries. He last competed in men's doubles at Wimbledon with Alexander Bublik. In a statement, Kyrgios acknowledged the toll of injuries and nearing the end of his career, saying, "None of that excuses what I did."

The former world number 13 has seven ATP singles titles and reached the 2022 Wimbledon final, losing to Novak Djokovic. He and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the 2022 Australian Open doubles title. Kyrgios has previously spoken about mental health struggles, including a psychiatric hospital stay in London after Wimbledon 2019. He is free to play immediately but faces ongoing physical challenges.
