Enric Mas clinched the Vuelta a Espana title on the final day as Britain's Matthew Brennan missed out on a sixth consecutive Grand Tour stage win. Brennan, riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, had won five stages already, stating the team never dreamed of victory after initially targeting stage wins. His bid for a sixth was ended by an errant rock on the road during stage eight, which also contributed to Tadej Pogacar's general classification abandonment.

Despite the setback, Brennan's performance highlighted the strength of British cycling, noted alongside a record 49 British riders on the World Tour in 2026. The race served as a timely reminder of the UK's golden age, marked by Team Sky's dominance and stars like Mark Cavendish and Lizzie Deignan. Pogacar, aiming for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title, withdrew after stage eight following a crash.

His dominance was evident earlier, having won stage four by more than two minutes. The race also saw Josh Tarling finish third in the opening time trial before returning home following the tragic death of his brother Finlay. Finlay Tarling was killed after hitting a stray van during the Volta a Portugal, prompting calls for improved safety measures in the sport.
