After a winter of soul-searching following a horrendous Headingley Saturday 12 months ago, Durham produced a summer of dominance to win the County Championship Division Two title at a canter.

Needing to bat out 89 overs to avoid relegation, Durham were skittled for 85 by Yorkshire, going down by a single point to hand Hampshire a reprieve. Hard conversations followed, but the north-east county corrected their mistakes, clinching promotion with a 93-run win over Middlesex.

"Twelve months is a long time in cricket," head coach Ryan Campbell told BBC's Test Match Special. "We sat there and did not panic. We had some heated debates... I'm really grateful to be back here and win the thing."

Campbell got tough in the off-season, taking the squad to scale Britain's three highest peaks - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - within 24 hours. "We wanted to test the players mentally," he said.

Director of cricket Marcus North, Campbell and captain Alex Lees all stayed in post. Campbell backed Lees, forming a leadership group. "It's very easy to throw blame at the leaders," he said. "We hadn't supported him enough."

Distractions included Ben Stokes' suspension and Brydon Carse's Derby incident, but Campbell embraced them. "We feel like we're a family here," he said.
