Peterborough United have sacked manager Luke Williams following Saturday's home defeat to Doncaster, which left the club second from bottom in League One.

The club stated the decision was not taken lightly but that the board felt it had no other choice. "The team's form in League One has not matched the board's expectations, particularly given the significant investment made in the squad," the statement read.

Peterborough's summer signings included Danny Ormerod from AFC Fylde for at least £600,000 and Ethan Williams from Manchester United for a "sizeable" sum. Williams won 18 and lost 20 of his 47 matches in charge, making it the shortest spell of his managerial career.

Williams, who previously worked as a customer care assistant at Bristol Airport after leaving Swansea, had earlier guided Notts County to National League promotion in 2023. Assistant manager Ryan Harley and coach Connell Rawlinson have been placed in temporary charge while a permanent replacement is sought.
