Jellyfin 12.0 Stable Release: Database Rewrite & Books Support

Hacker News •
×

Jellyfin 12.0 is now available as a stable release, continuing the database conversion work started in 10.11 and adding long-awaited support for books and comics. Users must be on 10.10.7 or any 10.11.x release to upgrade directly to 12.0; older versions require an intermediate upgrade to 10.10.7 first.

Before upgrading, stop Jellyfin and take a full manual backup of data and config directories. The release changes the database schema and rewrites data on first boot, making backups essential. Usernames are now case-insensitive, so accounts differing only by capitalization will cause migration failures. A full library scan is required post-upgrade, which will take longer than usual and may show some movies as newly added.

Third-party plugins built for 10.11 will not load on 12.0 and must be updated. Support for legacy `/emby/` and `/mediabrowser/` addresses has been removed, along with deprecated sign-in methods. The release includes security fixes and drops the major version "10" from its naming scheme.

Full changelogs are available on the server and web GitHub releases pages.
