Broadcom has removed public downloads for VMware's Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK), a critical library used by migration tools like Microsoft Azure Migrate, Red Hat Migration Toolkit, Nutanix Move, virt-v2v, and nbdkit. The change, documented by Shape Blue on August 25, 2026, affects VDDK versions 8 and 9, with all known URL paths returning 404 errors. Broadcom has issued no public announcement, deprecation notice, or replacement tool.

Customers opening support cases report being told VDDK is no longer available for general use. Since VDDK underpins the ability to read and write VMware virtual disks, its removal creates a significant obstacle for organizations attempting to migrate workloads off vSphere. The move appears intentional, though Broadcom's motivation remains unclear.

Migration vendors and customers are now scrambling to find workarounds or archived versions, adding friction to an already complex exit process from the VMware ecosystem.
