The investigation, which began with a human resources complaint from a former staff member, has expanded to include questions about hiring and firing practices, particularly regarding female and minority staffers. General manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave in late July and later resigned. Belichick faced about 13 minutes of questions on the matter during his weekly press conference, with reporters also asking about his job security.

Belichick expressed confidence in his relationship with school officials, including chancellor Lee Roberts and athletic director Steve Newmark, stating they have been supportive and that he would make any necessary corrections. The Tar Heels are coming off a 15-10 win over TCU in their season opener, a stark contrast to a 34-point loss in his debut last year.

Despite the off-field distractions, running back Benjamin Hall emphasized the team's focus on internal improvement and performance, saying they are not concerned with headlines. The team is preparing for their next game against East Tennessee State.
