On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Boston College hosted Rutgers in the annual Red Bandanna Game, honoring former lacrosse player Welles Crowther, who died rescuing over a dozen people in the World Trade Center's South Tower. Crowther, a BC alumnus known for carrying a red bandanna, was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump. Alison Crowther, his mother, spoke on the field, emphasizing the power to bring good into the world.

The game featured special uniforms with 'FOR WELLES,' red bandanna giveaways, and tributes including a video and memorial recognition for 22 BC alumni and 37 Rutgers alumni lost on 9/11. Rutgers wore 'Never Forget' pants and helmets with Stars and Stripes honoring their fallen alumni. Boston College won 28-21, with Coach Bill O'Brien calling it a monumental night honoring Crowther's legacy.
