Apple is pushing a new version of its earbuds into the final testing phase, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The prototypes, rumored to carry a built‑in camera, have entered design validation testing (DVT) after months of speculation that began in February. Early internal trials suggest the form factor will resemble the current AirPods Pro 3, with a slightly longer stem to house the lens.

Apple plans to label the camera‑enabled earbuds AirPods Ultra, a name leaked alongside details that the lenses will feed visual data to Siri for contextual awareness. After DVT, the devices will move to production validation testing (PVT), where small batches are manufactured. Gurman warns that a disappointing AI experience could stall the launch, which was originally slated for the first half of the year.

Consumers could see a shift from audio‑only accessories to wearables that map surroundings, opening possibilities for augmented‑reality apps and hands‑free video capture. However, the longer stem and added hardware may affect comfort and battery life, factors that have limited prior AirPods upgrades.
