Walmart and Sam's Club are finally rolling out tap to pay in stores. Some locations will begin offering the feature on August 24, with full availability expected across all US stores and clubs by the end of the year. The rollout to fuel stations is projected to finish by mid-2025.

Customers will be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam's Club, and One Pay cards to digital wallets for contactless payments. The move brings the retail giants in line with competitors who adopted tap to pay years earlier.

Apple Pay launched in 2014, and Google Wallet support for contactless payments dates back to 2011. Retailers like Subway, Macy's, and Walgreens have long supported these services. Even Home Depot, known for slower tech adoption, embraced tap to pay in 2024.

The delayed implementation has drawn attention, as contactless credit cards and mobile payment systems have been widely available for over a decade. Walmart's entry into tap to pay marks a significant shift toward modern payment methods for the nation's largest retailer.
