Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind since 2010, is stepping down from his CEO role. He will transition to chairman of the unit and also assume the title of chief scientist for Google's parent company, Alphabet. Hassabis will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, the pharmaceutical spinoff focused on AI drug discovery.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently CTO of Google DeepMind, will step into a senior VP role, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai, and will oversee day-to-day operations. This leadership change occurs as Google DeepMind faces increased pressure in the generative AI race.

Additionally, Jeff Dean, the former chief scientist, is leaving to found a startup called Discovery Loop, which Google is investing in and will provide cloud services for. Discovery Loop aims to build self-improving AI models. This follows other recent transformations at Google, including the disbanding of the AlphaFold team, whose AI technology earned a Nobel Prize.
