Former Senator John E. Sununu won the Republican Senate primary in New Hampshire on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press, setting up a general election contest against Democratic nominee Representative Chris Pappas. Sununu, backed by President Trump and major outside groups, defeated former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown.

He will face Pappas in the race for the open Senate seat left by retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat who has served three terms and previously defeated both Sununu in 2008 and Brown in 2014. Sununu, who served three terms in the U.S. House and one in the Senate, is the brother of former Governor Chris Sununu and son of former Governor John H. Sununu.

Brown expressed frustration over voter confusion between Sununu and his more famous relatives. A recent University of New Hampshire poll showed Sununu narrowly leading Pappas. The Senate Leadership Fund pledged $17 million for the general election, while the Senate Majority PAC plans $10.2 million in TV ads.

Pappas released an ad referencing the Epstein files, which Sununu’s campaign called "disgusting," denying any connection to Jeffrey Epstein. Sununu also tied Pappas to Trump’s tariffs, citing rising costs in New Hampshire. During the primary, Sununu emphasized economic focus, term limits, congressional health care costs, and cutting congressional pay if members vote to shut down the government.
