Ken Griffin's Citadel hedge fund is restructuring its international equities leadership, merging Citadel International Equities and Strategic Equity Investments under Nabeel Bhanji, 40, who joined from Elliott Management last year. Drew Gillanders, 54, the former head of international equities, is departing. The consolidation reflects Citadel's push to deploy more capital across Europe and Asia from offices in London, Hong Kong, and Singapore as the multi-manager sector expands.

Bhanji's team at Strategic Equity Investments has taken larger, longer-held positions and pursued a "constructivist" dialogue with portfolio company management and boards, stopping short of Elliott-style activism. Citadel, founded by Griffin in 1990, manages over $77bn and alongside Millennium Management dominates the fast-growing multi-manager corner of the $5.6tn hedge fund industry. Bhanji spent over a decade at Elliott as a portfolio manager and equity partner, working on high-profile campaigns at Anglo American and SoftBank.

Citadel's equities fund is up over 23% and its flagship Wellington fund has gained over 12% in the first eight months of this year.
