Traders pared bets for interest-rate hikes in September. The benchmark equities gauge was up 0.6% as of 9:40 a.m. in New York after Waller said his next decision on interest rates will be “heavily influenced” by August inflation data due next week. Nine of the 11 sectors in the index rose, led by gains in communication services while staples fell.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index rose 0.5%, as broader gains were kept in check after chip stocks dropped following Broadcom Inc.’s earnings.
