India's Reserve Bank of India (RBI) faces a potential $10.6 billion cost from shielding banks against currency risk on funds raised through its Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) plan. The program attracted a record $127 billion from the diaspora, with an additional $9.15 billion from overseas foreign-currency debt and external commercial borrowings, bringing total inflows to $136.38 billion—exceeding the RBI's $80 billion estimate. Economists warn the hedging obligation could impose a significant financial burden on the central bank despite the fundraising success.
