Chelsea suffered a 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, extending Xabi Alonso's winless start to five Premier League matches. The absence of injured striker Joao Pedro, who had six goal involvements in four appearances, disrupted an attack featuring Cole Palmer and £117m signing Morgan Rogers. Danny Welbeck, 35, replaced Pedro but managed only 17 touches before being substituted.

Brentford took a 61st-minute lead through Jaidon Anthony's header from a corner, exposing Chelsea's persistent set-piece vulnerability — they have conceded 23 set-piece goals since last season, the most in the league. Chelsea then collapsed, conceding two more. Alonso has experimented with systems and handed 11 debuts, including 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson against his former club.

The team has conceded 12 goals in five matches, more than any other side. Stand-in captain Levi Colwill admitted set-piece defending is "not good enough." With the international break providing three weeks to regroup, Alonso faces mounting pressure to establish tactical coherence and defensive solidity.
