In 2011, Apple released the Cards app, a Steve Jobs–initiated project that let users design and mail custom letterpress cards. Despite its innovative concept, the project was plagued by operational chaos. Former production partner Mike, who worked with Apple’s fulfillment vendor, described it as a “pinnacle of incompetence” and “intercontinental mayhem.” The app required printing on 100 percent cotton paper using restored 1850s Heidelberg Letterpresses in upstate New York, a massive technical challenge. Apple also operated print facilities in the Czech Republic and Japan to meet holiday demand. The project, codenamed Speed Racer, launched during Jobs’ final year and was built from scratch, not reusing iPhoto card designs. Though the app is long gone, its legacy persists in Apple’s ambitious, sometimes flawed, product history.

Apple’s insistence on cotton paper sparked editorial disputes, including with Macworld. Mike, who managed the print program, recalled the stress of scaling production across continents. He requested anonymity, fearing Apple’s reaction, even years later. The Cards app was eventually sunset, but its origin story reveals Jobs’ visionary yet demanding approach, and the human cost of executing it at scale.
