Kenya's capital Nairobi has been confirmed as host of the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time the event will be held in Africa. The decision was announced by World Athletics president Sebastian Coe following the Ultimate Championship in Hungary, with London missing out despite a strong bid. Munich will host the 2031 edition.

Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics and co-founder of Athletic Ventures, expressed deep disappointment: "We believed we had an outstanding bid which would genuinely take the sport to new levels." He thanked the Government, Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Mayor of London, UK Sport, London Stadium, and West Ham United for their support.

Coe called Nairobi's selection historic: "Taking our championships to Africa for the first time will be historic. Athletics is woven into the fabric of Kenya." He highlighted Kenyan legends including Faith Kipyegon, Vivian Cheruiyot, Eliud Kipchoge, Hellen Obiri, David Rudisha, Kip Keino, Paul Tergat, and Tegla Loroupe. The 2025 championships will be held in Beijing before Nairobi's landmark 2029 event.
