Union Berlin has appointed Marie-Louise Eta as the first woman to coach a men's team in Bundesliga history. The 34-year-old takes over from Steffen Baumgart, who was fired after a 3-1 loss to Heidenheim left the club in 11th place, just seven points above the relegation zone with five matches remaining.

Eta, who previously made history as the Bundesliga's first female assistant coach in 2023, was coaching Union's under-19 men's team and had agreed to lead the women's team next season. Sporting director Horst Heldt said Eta will serve as interim coach before transitioning to the women's side in summer. She previously stepped in for media duties when head coach Nenad Bjelica was suspended in 2024.

Union Berlin's decision comes after winning only two of 14 games since the winter break. Heldt acknowledged the club's precarious position despite their mid-table standing, emphasizing the need for immediate results. With five games left in the season, Eta faces the challenge of securing Bundesliga survival for a club that has never been relegated since promotion to Germany's top flight.
