Apple has begun scaling its supply chain for a first‑ever variable‑aperture camera that will appear on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max this September. The new system lets the lens adjust light intake, offering deeper control over depth of field and exposure compared to the fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture that powered the iPhone 14 Pro through 17 Pro.

Sunny Optical in China has already started producing the tiny actuators that drive the aperture mechanism, while camera‑module assembly is slated for early summer. LG Innotek, Apple’s main camera partner, is setting up dedicated equipment at its Gumi plant in South Korea and is expected to take on a larger share of production because of the added complexity.

Ming‑Chi Kuo first flagged the variable‑aperture feature in December 2024, and a follow‑up report in October 2025 confirmed that Apple is moving ahead with the technology. The change follows the company’s adoption of a folded tetraprism zoom lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which also shifted production to a single supplier.

With the camera module set to roll out in June or July, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are poised to debut alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone in September. The variable‑aperture system promises sharper night shots and more creative control, giving consumers a tangible upgrade over the fixed‑aperture generations that followed the iPhone 13.
