At Akademy 2026, KDE's annual developer conference, veteran UX designer Scott Jenson urged open-source projects to move beyond the traditional "windows, icons, menus, pointer" (WIMP) model. Jenson, who previously worked at Apple, Google, and on the Chrome team, now contributes to Mastodon and Home Assistant. He acknowledged a cultural shift at Google, stating the company was "really trying to do the right thing" in 2005 but changed radically, prompting his departure. Jenson argued open source desperately needs UX help but remains understaffed.

He highlighted specific desktop interactions where Linux lags macOS. Recalling work on the Macintosh Finder, he detailed the decision to place ellipses in the middle of truncated file names rather than the end. He also contrasted drag-and-drop behavior: on macOS, item selection occurs on mouse down while window raising happens on mouse up, allowing seamless dragging from background windows. On most Linux systems, mouse down raises the window immediately, complicating the action. After Jenson raised this on Mastodon, a KDE developer implemented the fix within hours, exemplifying open source's agility.

Jenson's talk, which garnered over half a million views on YouTube after a previous Ubuntu conference appearance, emphasized that rapid implementation of good ideas is a key strength of the ecosystem.
