AMD's FSR 5 'Scarlet Cortex' represents a major leap in real-time neural rendering, using adaptive AI to enhance lighting, materials, and atmospheric effects without altering game geometry. Unlike NVIDIA's DLSS 5, which relies on static per-game profiles, FSR 5 learns from each game in real time, respecting artistic intent while progressively improving visual quality.

This driver-level technology runs exclusively on RDNA 4 AI accelerators in Radeon RX 9000-series GPUs, performing both inference and weight updates simultaneously at 60+ FPS. The system intercepts textures and shader programs at load time to pre-classify materials and rendering intent before the first frame renders. AMD plans to expand support beyond DirectX 12 to Vulkan and DirectX 11.

At launch, FSR 5 uses a whitelist approach for validated games, with plans to transition to a blacklist model for competitive multiplayer titles.
