Xbox has announced the launch of its disc-to-digital attestation program, confirming recent leaks about the upcoming Helix console. The program, revealed by Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation, will be available for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into their console and launching the game.

This digital license enables gameplay across Xbox consoles, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The initiative represents part of Xbox's broader commitment to game preservation. Xbox describes the program as a test run for the Helix console, which is expected to feature full backwards compatibility despite lacking a physical disc drive.

The digital entitlement program will launch for Xbox Insiders on August 31, though the list of compatible games remains unconfirmed. Notably, the program grants one revokable license per game disc while keeping the physical disc playable. Questions remain about how this will affect the second-hand game market.
