Western Digital Targets Enterprise AI Storage Market with Ultrastar HDDs

Western Digital is pivoting hard toward enterprise storage after spinning off its consumer flash business to SanDisk. At Computex 2026 in Taipei, the company positioned its Ultrastar and G-Drive brands as solutions for the exploding data demands of AI workloads. WD argues that treating AI as a data system rather than just compute infrastructure is essential for long-term viability.

The storage vendor showcased its Ultrastar hard drive lineup featuring advanced recording technologies like UltraSMR, ePMR, and HAMR to achieve massive capacities. These traditional mechanical drives target the enterprise and cloud markets where data growth rates are outpacing what flash can economically handle. WD emphasized that managing exponential data expansion while maintaining cost efficiency represents the core challenge for data centers.

To support these high-capacity drives, Western Digital introduced the Ultrastar Data 3000 series JBOD enclosures. These platforms offer twelve ports of 24 Gb/s SAS-4 connectivity and incorporate ArcticFlow multizone cooling alongside IsoVibe vibration isolation. The company claims these environmental controls can reduce drive return rates by up to sixty-two percent in dense deployments.

This shift reflects broader industry recognition that AI's storage demands differ fundamentally from traditional enterprise workloads. While competitors chase performance gains in flash storage, WD is betting that cost-effective, high-capacity HDDs remain essential infrastructure for the AI boom.
