Sony and TSMC Joint Venture for Image Sensors

Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC announced a definitive agreement to establish Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation as a joint venture in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The JV will focus on development and volume production of image sensors for smartphones using advanced process technology, with volume production expected to begin in 2029.\n\nSony will be the sole controlling shareholder and the JV will operate as a consolidated subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation. Sony plans to contribute approximately 465 billion yen through cash and asset transfers, while TSMC will contribute about 282 billion yen in cash.

Additional investments are being considered with expected Japanese government support.\n\nUnder the partnership, Sony leads core image sensor technology development, product planning, and design, while TSMC provides advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise. The collaboration aims to accelerate commercialization, drive innovation, and strengthen manufacturing capacity. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

All other terms remain unchanged from the preliminary agreement announced on May 8, 2026.
