Raspberry Pi has launched the AI HAT+ 2, an add-on board for the Raspberry Pi 5 that enables generative AI workloads. It features a Hailo-10H accelerator delivering 40 TOPS of inferencing performance and 8 GB of dedicated RAM, allowing local execution of larger language and vision-language models without cloud subscriptions.

This new board fills a gap left by its predecessor, the original AI HAT+, which focused on vision tasks like object detection. By running GenAI models directly on the device, it maintains the data privacy and low-latency benefits of edge computing while expanding the Pi's capabilities into text generation, translation, and scene description.

The AI HAT+ 2 is available now for $130. It supports fine-tuning pre-trained models for specific tasks using Hailo's tools. This move aligns with a broader industry push toward accessible, on-device AI, letting developers and hobbyists experiment with generative models without relying on expensive cloud services.
