NVIDIA's six-year-old A100 "Ampere" accelerator will continue serving customers through 2029 according to CoreWeave and confirmed by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. The company signed an agreement to rent chips released more than half a decade ago for additional years, demonstrating strong demand for legacy hardware.

The A100 GA100 SKU features 6,912 CUDA cores and up to 80 GB of HBM2E memory, making it valuable despite its age. CoreWeave customers have rented these chips through 2029 for AI training and inference, showing the chip remains commercially viable.

While newer generations like Hopper, Blackwell, and Rubin offer significant improvements in efficiency and performance, older chips still hold value because they are cost-effective and functional. NVIDIA emphasizes that computing extends beyond just chips; CUDA provides a common platform for developing and maintaining these systems.
