Nintendo has no plans to abandon physical games on the Switch 2, according to Bill van Zyll, the company's Vice President for Latin America. Speaking at Brasil Game Show 2026, he stated that the console will support both physical and digital releases, emphasizing that fans still strongly prefer cartridges. This stance contrasts with Sony's announcement that disc production for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028.
Physical media remains especially popular in Latin America, including Brazil. While Nintendo's own data shows 61.5% of its software sales are digital, the company continues to value physical releases. Since May, Nintendo has also priced digital Switch 2 exclusives lower than their physical counterparts. Despite shifting trends, physical cartridges appear secure for the foreseeable future on the Switch 2.
