Commodore International has announced the revival of the Totally Accurate Controller (TAC-2) more than 40 years after its original debut. Pre‑orders are now open at commodore.net. The TAC-2, first launched in 1983 by Suncom Technologies, earned a reputation for its microswitch‑free, durable construction, arcade‑accurate ball‑top handle and clicky dual fire buttons, and rare units now fetch over $100 on the secondary market.

To improve accessibility, Commodore is manufacturing a faithful recreation that uses a solid steel, chrome‑plated shaft in place of the original TR418 tire‑valve and brass ball, eliminating the stress‑fracture issue that caused early failures. The new design is claimed to handle over 3 million moves without failure.

The controller will retail for $49.99 and will be offered in five colourways—BASIC Beige, C= White, Knight Black, Starlight Edition, and a limited Founders Edition priced at $64 with gold‑PVD ball and buttons. BASIC Beige, Starlight and Founders editions feature a fixed‑colour LED under the fire buttons, while Knight Black and C= White retain the classic look. The BASIC Beige matches the Commodore 64 Ultimate “breadbin” style, C= White echoes the C64C slimline, and Starlight mirrors the translucent aesthetic of the Ultimate edition.

CEO Peri Fractic said the re‑release honors Commodore’s retro and futurism pillars and preserves a piece of computing history, delivering the same tactile experience with modern reliability.
