CD Projekt Red Fixes Documentation Woes After Cyberpunk 2077 Disaster

CD Projekt Red learned its lesson from Cyberpunk 2077's troubled launch. At the Digital Dragons panel, lead technical writer Jarosław Ruciński and senior technical writer Adrian Fulneczek revealed that poor documentation was the core problem — not just buggy code. During development, the studio created over 8,000 pages in Confluence, but migrating to a cloud instance fragmented those documents, and maintenance stopped entirely.

Now the studio requires proper documentation before anything passes a development gate. Institutional knowledge is shared across all teams and projects, cutting duplicate work and letting the whole company benefit from breakthroughs on individual titles. Neither Cyberpunk 2 nor The Witcher 4 have confirmed release dates, but Cyberpunk 2 is expected around 2030, while The Witcher 4 has moved past pre-production.

The shift toward disciplined documentation at CD Projekt Red represents a fundamental change in how the studio manages its pipeline. After the reputational damage of launching Cyberpunk 2077 in a rough state, prioritizing shared knowledge over siloed team habits should help prevent the kind of coordination failures that plagued the earlier release.
