Mass layoffs at ZeniMax‑run studios have sliced 50% of Id Software’s staff and 25% of Bethesda Game Studios, totaling 440 positions across BGS, ZOS, id, ZWU (QA) and corporate roles, including CTO and CSUR.

The OneBGS union, affiliated with the CWA, announced a walk‑out on July 15, staging marches outside Bethesda studios in Montreal, Austin, Dallas and Rockville. Union leaders warned that Microsoft and ZeniMax “want us to accept this as a done deal and quietly disappear.”

Negotiations will focus on Effects Bargaining to secure preferential transfers to open Xbox and Microsoft roles, stronger severance, extended healthcare and recall rights that oblige the company to rehire laid‑off employees first when new positions arise.

For gamers, the strike could delay upcoming titles and shift development talent, while the broader industry may seeOrder shifts toward stronger union protections and a reassessment of corporate layoff strategies.
