1666: Amsterdam Dev Drops AI Art After Backlash

1666: Amsterdam developer Panache Games has abandoned generative AI following community backlash after using AI-generated assets in its prologue. Co-founder Patrice Désilets stated the assets were removed from the August 25 Early Access release and the team will no longer use AI in development. The studio previously claimed early versions of the art would be replaced with human-made assets before the full release, which now appears to be the case. While the game launched to a Mixed 66% Steam review score, criticism centered on clunky gameplay and storytelling, poor graphical quality, and bugs, not solely the AI usage.

Désilets clarified that AI was used only in early pre-production stages and has been fully removed, though it remains unclear whether this ban applies to the entire 1666 development or the studio’s broader process. Misleading reports suggesting developers could no longer distinguish AI art from human art reportedly fueled the controversy.

Despite the AI debate, the game faces broader criticism for its gameplay, narrative, graphics, and technical stability. The Summer Game Fest reveal initially sparked discussion, but the studio’s pivot away from AI reflects a response to player sentiment rather than a technical limitation.

The decision highlights growing scrutiny of AI in game development, as studios balance efficiency with artistic integrity and community trust.
