QuEra's Quantum Leap: From 260 to 10,000+ Qubits by 2028

Quantum computing startup QuEra laid out an aggressive roadmap that could reshape the competitive landscape. The company plans to deliver a system with over 10,000 physical qubits to Amazon by 2028, a dramatic jump from its current 260-qubit hardware. This machine would produce 256 error-corrected logical qubits with 99.9999 percent error-free operations, enabling millions of successful computations.

QuEra's Yuval Borger explained the strategic shift away from NISQ systems, which dominated early quantum development but lack practical application capabilities. The startup will skip intermediate releases entirely, moving directly toward fault-tolerant quantum computers. Current systems offer roughly 250 qubits with significant error rates, sufficient only for testing error correction codes rather than real-world applications.

The 2029 successor aims even higher with twice the hardware qubits and over 1,000 logical qubits at 99.9999999 percent error resistance. QuEra's neutral atom approach uses laser grids to trap atoms, making scaling primarily a matter of increasing laser capacity rather than redesigning chip architecture.

Two academic labs behind QuEra have already demonstrated 3,000-qubit systems, proving the underlying technology works. Their ability to replace atoms lost during operations addresses one of quantum computing's major reliability challenges. If QuEra delivers on this timeline, the company could leapfrog established players like IBM and Google in the race toward practical quantum advantage.
