House of the Dragon S3 teaser promises dragon war

HBO has released a teaser for House of the Dragon's third season, promising an escalation of the Targaryen civil war. The preview comes as the fantasy drama's sister series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, prepares to conclude its season. The teaser arrives after a second season that ended with young Lucerys and his dragon Arrax devoured by Aemond's massive dragon Vhagar.

The series continues the story set 200 years before Game of Thrones, chronicling House Targaryen's decline. After King Viserys' death, his widow Alicent and father-in-law Otto Hightower crowned her son Aegon as king instead of Viserys' chosen heir Rhaenyra. The conflict intensified when Aemond killed Rhaenyra's son Lucerys, eliminating any hope for peace. The second season featured the brutal "Blood and Cheese" assassination and saw Aegon severely wounded, leaving Aemond as regent.

Season three will showcase the Battle of the Gullet, a major naval conflict trimmed from the previous season's reduced eight-episode count. The returning cast includes Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra, Olivia Cooke as Alicent, and Matt Smith as Daemon. With Rhaenyra declaring open dragon war and Aegon hiding in Braavos, the stage is set for the devastating conflict that will reshape Westeros and lead to the extinction of dragons.
