While commercial satellite imagery from US firms like Planet Labs and Vantor has been restricted due to US government security concerns, researchers have increasingly relied on alternatives such as Europe's Copernicus satellite imagery. Groups like Bellingcat and major news outlets, including The New York Times and Washington Post, have utilized Copernicus data to investigate war damage and military strikes.

This new restriction, though potentially less burdensome than US firms' policies, introduces additional friction in providing timely information about the conflict. The war has already resulted in thousands of deaths, global energy shocks, and significant financial costs to the United States, with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth requesting an additional $70 billion.
