Dan Simmons, the acclaimed author of the Hyperion Cantos series, has died from a stroke at age 77. The Colorado-based writer, who transitioned from elementary education to full-time authorship in the 1980s, produced more than three dozen books across multiple genres including horror, historical fiction, and science fiction.

His 1989 novel Hyperion is widely considered his masterpiece and one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written. The book, structured after Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, follows seven pilgrims journeying to the mysterious Time Tombs where they may confront the legendary Shrike creature. Each character's story unfolds in a different subgenre, from political thriller to military science fiction.

The novel's emotional depth and innovative structure have left lasting impressions on readers. The Scholar's Tale, featuring Sol Weintraub and his daughter Rachel, moved many to tears with its exploration of time, love, and sacrifice. Simmons completed the Hyperion story across four books, providing a satisfying conclusion rare among epic science fiction series.
