The pre-Inca Chincha Kingdom's remarkable prosperity from 1000-1400 CE may have been fueled by bird droppings, according to new research published in PLoS ONE. Archaeologists found that nitrogen-rich seabird guano from nearby islands dramatically boosted maize production, creating agricultural surpluses that powered the kingdom's economy, trade networks, and population growth.

Jacob Bongers and colleagues analyzed 35 maize samples from buried tombs in Peru's southern coast, discovering significantly higher nitrogen levels than natural soil conditions would produce. This biochemical evidence, combined with historical written sources describing guano collection and trade, points to sophisticated agricultural practices. The Chincha Islands, located just 25 kilometers away, provided abundant guano from guanay cormorants, Peruvian pelicans, and Peruvian boobies - birds whose droppings contain essential nutrients for crop growth.

The research suggests that fertilizer was literally power in ancient Andean cultures. The agricultural surplus enabled by guano likely drove the Chincha's regional influence and strategic alliance with the Inca Empire. This finding adds a fascinating dimension to our understanding of how resource management shaped pre-Columbian civilizations, demonstrating that even something as seemingly mundane as bird droppings could be a critical factor in building one of South America's most influential ancient kingdoms.
