Verstappen F1 Quit Threat Renewed

Max Verstappen has reignited his threat to quit Formula 1 if the sport's regulations don't change for 2027. After qualifying sixth for the Canadian Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver expressed frustration with current power unit rules that force drivers to optimize lap times in an unnatural way. Verstappen, who has a contract until the end of 2028, stated the situation is "mentally not doable" for him to continue.

The FIA reached an agreement in principle last week to change the 2027 power unit split from the current near 50-50 between internal combustion and electrical energy to 60-40, reducing energy management requirements. While Verstappen initially said this proposal boosted his chances of staying, he now suggests the changes might not be enough. "If it stays like this, it's going to be a long year next year that I don't want," he said.

Verstappen has been critical of F1's 2026 regulations since 2023 and has increased his racing activities outside Formula 1, including the Nurburgring 24 Hours. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies confirms Verstappen's concerns stem from genuine care for the sport and that stakeholders are listening. With exact details of the 2027 changes still being negotiated among manufacturers, Verstappen's F1 future remains uncertain.
