Usyk vacates heavyweight titles, Kabayel and Itauma emerge as new contenders

Oleksandr Usyk, heavyweight champion, has announced he will vacate all his remaining world titles. His reign included wins over Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois, cementing his status as the sport’s top fighter. The move also ends talk of a Fury trilogy, which Usyk called closed, and opens the path for fresh contenders.

WBC moved quickly, elevating interim champion Agit Kabayel to heavyweight champion after Usyk’s withdrawal. Kabayel, who knocked out Zhilei Zhang in February 2025, now holds the belt and is a fallback option for Tyson Fury should his bout with Anthony Joshua collapse. IBF has yet to order a fight for its vacant title, Frank Sanchez positioned as top contender. Kabayel now eyes a unification bout later this year.

In the IBF rankings, 21‑year‑old Moses Itauma sits just behind Sanchez, followed by Filip Hrgovic. Itauma is set to fight Hrgovic on August 29, with the winner likely to face Sanchez for the vacant belt. Promoter Frank Warren backs Itauma as the division’s next star, and his upcoming clash could determine who inherits the heavyweight throne.
