Heavy rain in Colombo forced the abandonment of the opening Super 8s match between Pakistan and New Zealand at R Premadasa Stadium, with both sides taking one point each. Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha had won the toss and elected to bat before persistent downpours kept players off the field throughout Saturday.

Both teams entered the Super 8s with identical records of three wins and one defeat from the group stage. They join England and Sri Lanka in Group 2, while India, South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe make up Group 1. The Super 8s seeding was predetermined to aid logistics, resulting in all four group winners from round one being placed in the same pool.

England faces Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Sunday (9:30am, live on Sky Sports) seeking their 12th consecutive victory against the hosts. Harry Brook's team recently swept Sri Lanka 3-0 in a bilateral T20 series. New Zealand remain the only team in Group 2 yet to win the T20 World Cup, with England (2010, 2022), Pakistan (2009) and Sri Lanka (2014) having previously claimed the title.
