England captain Ben Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson violated the team's midnight curfew by attending a nightclub where an altercation occurred with a Saracens rugby player. The unnamed rugby player threw a punch at Atkinson but connected with a security guard who required stitches. Stokes and Atkinson were unharmed in the incident at Rex Rooms in Chelsea.

The ECB confirmed it is investigating a "breach of team protocols" following the first Test against New Zealand, which England won by 115 runs. Stokes led the victory while Atkinson took 5-30 in the second innings. The Cricket Regulator has been informed as the ECB seeks further information before making squad announcements for the second Test.

The incident raises questions about England's team culture after ECB managing director Rob Key previously stated the team "does not have a drinking problem." This breach comes stricter protocols were implemented following incidents during the Ashes and in New Zealand. Stokes has led England since April 2022 and set high standards on and off the field.
